CENIT@EA at 2nd EAC STI Conference

From 27 – 29 October experts on science, technology and innovation from the six EAC member states discussed the challenges and opportunities in their field for their region. Together with GIZ CENIT@EA supported the 2nd Science, Technology and Innovation Conference that took place virtually and in Buyumbura, Burundi.

The conference provided a platform for the players in Science,Technology and Innovation stakeholders in the East African Community and beyond to share their experiences and results within the knowledge and technology generation, translation and transfer chain. Experts including academics, researchers, managers, industry representatives and students shared their findings in research and practice.

The Centre of Excellence in ICT for East Africa, CENIT@EA, was an official partner of the conference together with the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), one of the implementation partners behind the centre. Simon Hochstein, Programm Director GIZ Tanzania, in his speech emphasised the importance of “Digital Skills for an Innovative East African Industry” in the broader context of “Capacity Development in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) for enhanced emergency response in EAC Region”, the topic of one of the plenary session during the conference.

The conference was organized by EASTECO, the East African Science and Technology Commission together with IUCEA, the Inter-University Council for East Africa. Both are institutions of the East African Community (EAC). Stakeholders of STI in the region and globally, including Ministries responsible for STI and National Councils/Commissions of Science and Technology supported the conference.
